I'm trying to troubleshoot one of the computers in my office used by one of our secretaries and the issues this one exerts has me baffled. When I try to do a Windows Update, when it gets to the part where it says 'Checking for the latest updates for your computer.' With the green animated progress bar, the process does not go anywhere from there. It just keeps 'checking' into infinity, all processor and disk usage at zero.
XP Pro Windows Update Hangs at 'Checking for the latest updates for your computer.'
I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and found a number of issues and fixed them and my virus scanner yielded nothing. It still didn't fix the problem.

What can I do to fix this? Originally posted by indeego: Close all apps, Move the entire contents of the%systemroot% softwareDistribution folder to a temporary directory, and then revisit WU/MU.
There's a little more to it than that; follow the below instructions. Bring up a command prompt and type 'proxycfg -d' to clear the proxy cache. Type 'net stop wuauserv' to stop the automatic updates service. Delete contents of C: WINDOWS SoftwareDistribution.

Go back to the command prompt and type 'net start wuauserv' to restart the automatic updates. Now retry Windows update. NOTE: There is no need to move the contents, or otherwise save the contents of the Windows SoftwareDistribution folder.
